1993 Observing Sessions

May 22
Time: 22:30 - 23:00 EDT
Location: The Farm
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Deep Sky Observing

Arrived on site at about 19:30 with Walter MacDonald. Started observing at 22:30 under a good sky, but by 23:00 it clouded over. Observed 3 "new" deep sky objects: NGC 4030, NGC 3976, NGC 4045 - all galaxies in Virgo.

July 1/2
Time: 23:30 - 03:30 EDT
Location: The Farm
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Deep Sky Observing

Spent from 23:30 to 02:30 assisting Doug Clapp with CCD imaging. After moonset, which occurred around 03:00, I observed 3 "new" deep sky objects. NGC 3147, NGC 2985, NGC 2787.

Went home the next day because of cloudy skies. Walter MacDonald was not present because he went to the RASC General Assembly in Halifax.

July 16/17
Time: 23:00 - 04:00 EDT
Location: The Farm
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Deep Sky Observing

Arrived on site at about 19:00 with Walter MacDonald, Cathy Hall, and Doug Clapp. Had to contend with cirrus clouds a few times during the night, but eventually cleared completely around 02:30. I observed 16 "new" deep sky objects:

Berk 58, Frolov 1, King 12, King 21, King 14, Stock 24, NGC 189, NGC 281, Berk 62, Berk 4, King 16, Cr 33, Cr 34, IC 1848, Berk 65, NGC 7314.

July 17/18
Time: 23:30 - 04:00 EDT
Location: The Farm
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Deep Sky Observing

Same group of people as above. Started observing with scattered clouds, but it eventually cleared nicely. I observed 12 "new" deep sky objects:

Basel 6, Biur 2, NGC 6883, Berk 86, vdB 130, NGC 7013, NGC 7063, IC 1369, NGC 7067, NGC 80, NGC 160, NGC 214.

August 11/12
Time: 22:00 - 01:00 EDT
Location: Kendal Recreation Area
Telescope: n/a
Activity: Perseid Meteor Shower

With Walter MacDonald and Doug Findlay. The sky was just clearing from recent thunderstorms so it was still quite damp, muggy, and hazy. During the first half-hour of observing we were periodically "blinded" by lightning! Here is our count:

Time Meteor Count Weather
22:00 - 23:00 21 cloudy for 40 minutes
23:00 - 00:00 56 clear, some haze
00:00 - 01:00 59 clear, lots of fog

August 20/21

Starfest '93

Time: 23:00 - 01:30 EDT
Location: Mount Forest, Ontario
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Deep Sky Observing

Arrived on site on Friday afternoon. Started observing around 22:30. Observed 11 "new" deep sky objects:

NGC 5660, NGC 5676, NGC 5689, NGC 5633, NGC 5557, NGC 5614, NGC 1003, NGC 1160, NGC 1161, NGC 1193, NGC 1186.

August 21/22

Starfest '93

Time: 23:00 - 02:00 EDT
Location: Mount Forest, Ontario
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Deep Sky Observing

On Saturday I started observing at 22:20. Observed 8 "new" deep sky objects:

NGC 6555, Pal 8, Cr 394, NGC 6716, NGC 6717 (= Pal 9), NGC 6723, NGC 6822, NGC 821.

November 28/29
Time: 23:30 - 02:00 EST
Location: My Backyard
Telescope: Meade 8-inch LX2 SCT
Activity: Total Lunar Eclipse

Observed and photographed only from the beginning of the partial phase to the end of totality. The photos did not turn out that well, mostly due to poor focusing, not placing the moon in the centre of the frame, and slightly off exposures.

The shadows on the picture at left are tree branches.
Start partial 23:40
Start total 01:02
Mid-eclipse 01:26
End total 01:50
End partial 03:12

160mm telephoto lens 8-inch at prime focus

Final Comments: A pretty good year for observing, although most of the observing was done in only two major sessions.  Too bad I did not get a chance to get out more often in the Spring and Fall.
