|Skyshed POD observatory with One bay|
Rare opportunity to buy a Skyshed POD with one bay. I understand that these are no longer available directly in the UK.
I’ve had this POD for four years and it’s still in very good condition. Certainly in keeping with the ‘indestructible’ reputation. I bought it from the original purchaser who’d had it for two years.
After dismantling it has cleaned up extremely well. See the photos. I have a little more cleaning to do around the base but I don’t envisage any problems.
All the fittings are present and in good condition. The ‘skate’ wheels upon which the dome rotates all function properly and smoothly. They’re good quality roller bearings. One or two show a little light rust on the outside face but this is not in the actual bearings and does not impair performance in any way - but there’s two spare wheels anyway. I’ll clean them up a little more.
I’ve not dismantled the two halves of the dome – see photos. This is because it has an excellent existing watertight seal which I don’t want to break and a secondary external rubber seal (kept in place by metal plates) that would need dismantling. It’s not a problem but it’s a lot more work for a potential buyer. I will split the quadrants if a buyer requires it for easier transport but it will result in complete reconstruction ‘from scratch’ (including the use of sealant) which is a shame if it can be avoided.
In its current form it will reassemble in a couple of hours on a flat base.
(There’s an excellent series of instruction videos on the website).
There is one chip from the molding on the inside of one panel from the previous owner. Again, there is no loss of functionality. See photo. Other than a few minor scuffs it’s in great condition. It’s retained its colour very well with only minor darkening under the base where it stood on the foundation. This doesn’t show externally.
Replacement nuts/bolts, marine sealant, ‘draught excluder’ and rubber membrane are all available off the web if needed – none should be. It’s just good to know that the POD is serviceable for years to come. There’s also a good Yahoo users’ forum.
The Skyshed website quotes $2,595 for a one bay pod and shipping within the US and Canada “upward of $1,000”. I don’t have a cost for shipping to the UK but I’m guessing the total price would be alot closer to $4,000. In the past those prices translated directly into £, presumably to allow for dealer margin (?).
I’m asking £1800. Bank transfer only. By comparison I see that a Pulsar 2.2m dome is £3.295 plus delivery and a 6x6 wooden shed observatory at £3,100 plus delivery.
Buyer arranges transport. A flatbed or large Luton style van will be required, especially if retaining the semi-constructed dome. I can help with loading.
Email any queries and for further photos on request. Happy to take “as long as it takes”.
